About Breast Surgery

Breast surgery is a collection of different procedures designed to improve the appearance, shape, or size of the breasts. With a sub-specialty in breast procedures, Dr. Tobbia is experienced in performing a variety of breast treatments that address each patient’s concerns and help them achieve their desired results.

Breast Enlargement

Breast enlargement, also known as a breast augmentation, is a procedure that is designed to enhance the size of the breasts. This procedure is most commonly performed with implants and/or a fat transfer. Dr. Tobbia uses silicone breast implants, which are known for their soft and more natural feel.

Breast Lift

A breast lift is a procedure designed to reshape and elevate the position of the breasts without adding additional volume. This procedure can address sagging breast tissue (ptosis) by removing excess skin and reshaping the breasts to restore a more uplifted, youthful position. Additionally, this procedure can also address malpositioned nipples by repositioning them for a perkier look. (1)

Breast Reconstruction

Many women who undergo a mastectomy or lumpectomy after a breast cancer diagnosis may experience a drop in self-esteem because of changes in their physical appearance. (2) Dr. Tobbia can help patients reconstruct their breasts, restoring both the appearance of their chest and their confidence. Dr. Tobbia can perform the following variations of breast reconstruction:

  • Autologous Reconstruction: Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator (DIEP) surgery utilizes body fat and blood vessels taken from the abdomen to reconstruct a new breast. (2) After the tissue is transplanted, Dr. Tobbia reconnects the blood vessels to restore blood flow and then shapes the tissue to recreate the natural appearance of the breast.
  • Implants: Artificial breast implants can augment the breasts and are especially helpful for patients who are unable to undergo an autologous reconstruction. Dr. Tobbia may use a tissue expander to help patients create space in the breast cavity before placing the selected breast implants.

Breast Reduction

Dr. Tobbia can perform a breast reduction to reduce the size of the breasts. Also known as a reduction mammoplasty, a breast reduction is often performed to help alleviate physical problems associated with enlarged breasts. Many women with overly large breasts struggle with neck, shoulder, and back pain. Some also experience chafing and rashes along the lower breast fold. Dr. Tobbia can remove excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts to create a more balanced and proportionate figure and provide relief from discomfort.

Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a condition characterized by male breast enlargement. This condition can occur at any stage in a man’s life, and is most commonly caused by hormonal imbalances, but may also be caused by various other factors, such as genetics, obesity, steroid use, or as a side effect of another medical condition. (3) Dr. Tobbia can perform a surgical procedure, liposuction, or a combination of the two, to sculpt a flatter, more masculine-appearing chest

Congenital Breast Conditions

Some women are naturally born with a congenital breast condition; breast surgery can often improve the appearance of any irregularities. Dr. Tobbia can create a customized procedure to address each patient’s individual concerns and condition. Patients interested in breast surgery are often looking to alleviate conditions such as:

  • Asymmetrical Breasts
  • Tubular Breasts
  • Poland’s Syndrome (4)
  • Nipple Deformities

Natural Breast Augmentation

Natural breast augmentation, also known as fat transfer to the breasts, is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the volume of the breasts using each patient’s own fat. This procedure utilizes a process called autologous fat grafting, which involves the transfer of fat from one area of the body to another. Dr. Tobbia will first use liposuction techniques to gently harvest fat cells from predetermined donor areas, typically the abdomen, flanks, or thighs. The fat cells are then purified before being reinjected back into the breasts to enhance their shape, size, and overall appearance

Consultation

Before scheduling their breast surgery, each patient must attend a personal consultation at our office in Hamburg. During the consultation, Dr. Tobbia will ask a series of questions about each patient’s medical history, current medications, concerns, and ideal results, as well as discuss each detail of the patient’s chosen procedure. An examination may also be performed to evaluate their physical anatomy and health

After this discussion, Dr. Tobbia will develop a personalized treatment plan for each patient using the most effective surgical techniques to help them achieve their goals. We will also provide personalized pre- and post-operative instructions to ensure each patient understands how to prepare their body before their procedure. Each patient is encouraged to prepare and ask questions, as we want each patient to feel informed and empowered about their breast surgery.

Preparation

Preparation for breast surgery will vary between individuals depending on the type of procedure being performed. Dr. Tobbia will provide each patient with a set of preparation instructions during their procedure, ensuring each patient is informed and understands how to prepare properly. Patients are often asked to

  • Temporarily avoid the use of certain medications and supplements containing blood-thinning properties.
  • Quit smoking several weeks before the appointment, as nicotine use can inhibit healing and overall safety.
  • Make arrangements for transportation home following the procedure.

Procedure

For your procedure, you will be placed under anesthesia, and Dr. Tobbia will make incisions as discreetly as possible. The duration of each procedure can vary, but patients can expect their treatment to last for several hours, depending on the type of breast surgery being performed and the extent of corrections. Dr. Tobbia will discuss the details of each patient’s procedure with them during their personal consultation

Recovery

Breast surgeries are typically performed as outpatient procedures, meaning that each patient will be released home on the same day as their procedure. Recovery from breast surgery is a gradual process that manifests differently for each patient, depending on the extent and type of procedure performed. It is common to experience mild swelling, bruising, and discomfort around the breasts, with these effects gradually subsiding within several weeks. Dr. Tobbia will provide each patient with personalized recovery instructions during their personal consultation
