Abdominal Liposuction
Offered at our convenient location in Hamburg
Abdominal liposuction is a minimally invasive method of contouring unwanted areas of fat to reveal a more slender midsection. For this procedure, surgeons must make one or two incisions that are less than 2 centimeters and strategically the suction fat deposits contributing to the look of a belly “pooch”. Besides the front side of the midsection, abdominal liposuction can also redefine the flanks, revealing a slimmer waist. With this type of body sculpting, male patients can enjoy greater body confidence with the highly sought-after “v-shaped” figure, whereas female patients can attain an attractive hourglass figure that accentuates their natural feminine curves.

About Liposuction
Liposuction is a versatile procedure that surgeons can perform on just about any area of the body that stores subcutaneous fat- the fat that develops just under the skin. It is an incredibly low-risk procedure, and researchers have improved its safety profile since its inception in the 1970s.
To ensure that surgeons can remove fat without harming the surrounding connective tissue structures under the skin, they administer a solution called tumescent fluid. Surgeons utilize this solution in every liposuction procedure to loosen the fat deposits, limit blood loss, and provide adequate numbing for the treatment area. Surgeons then use an instrument called a cannula to suction the tumescent fluid and subcutaneous fat, slimming down the unwanted bulges and rolls in various parts of the body. With the newest techniques, surgeons have worked to optimize this process, reduce patient downtime, and collect larger amounts of fat through tiny incisions that often do not even require suturing. Within the past 12 years, researchers have developed over 50 new liposuction techniques and devices to aid in the procedure and make it safer and more effective than ever before. (1)
Do I Need Abdominal Liposuction?
Abdominal fat is a common concern for many individuals working to lose stubborn pockets of fat. Whether it is due to hormone changes, lifestyle, age, or other factors, abdominal fat does not always respond to diet and exercise. Luckily, for most individuals, most of the fat in the abdominal area is subcutaneous, so liposuction can easily target these bulges. This is different from the visceral fat surrounding the organs located behind the abdominal wall.
Dr. Tobbia will help determine whether you can find effective, transformative results with liposuction. In general, if you have an area of “pinchable” tissue, liposuction can accurately contour the area in a way that allows the skin to bounce back to achieve a smoother silhouette. For some patients with sagging skin, liposuction can worsen laxity, so a skin-tightening procedure like a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) may be more appropriate.
Benefits of Abdominal Liposuction
Abdominal liposuction is one of the most common areas for liposuction treatment and has a range of benefits that have attracted millions of patients over the years. You not only can attain the more slender appearance you desire, but Dr. Tobbia’s approaches prioritize safety and efficiency above all else. With this procedure, you can:
- Achieve a natural-looking, uniform figure
- Improve your body proportions
- Highlight your abdominal muscle tone
- Increase your body confidence and range of clothing options
- Enjoy discreet and minimal scarring
- Customize your treatment plan to your unique body goals
Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction
Dr. Tobbia performs an advanced form of liposuction called ultrasonic high-definition liposuction (UAL) which involves using an ultrasound-emitting probe to break up fat deposits before fat harvesting. When the ultrasound comes in contact with fat deposits, it mostly turns to thermal energy that makes the fat less viscous, making the liposuction process less intensive. After undergoing UAL, patients can expect to heal quicker with less discomfort and bruising post-procedure. (2)
Candidates
Ideal candidates for abdominal liposuction are healthy individuals with good skin elasticity. Dr. Tobbia will evaluate your skin elasticity at the time of your consultation to ensure you get the quality results you are looking for. Liposuction is designed to help patients lose residual fat bulges, but it is not a weight loss procedure; candidates should be close to their ideal body weight to qualify. Finally, prospective patients should be at a relatively stable weight and have realistic expectations for the procedure. Dr. Tobbia prefers non-smoking patients, but she will consider those who are dedicated to avoiding nicotine for at least 2 weeks before the procedure and 2 weeks into recovery. Nicotine and other chemicals found in cigarettes can slow down the healing process and place patients at higher risk of developing post-procedure complications.
Personal Consultation
Dr. Tobbia will ensure that you have a positive and productive experience during your consultation. During this first appointment, you will get the chance to voice your concerns and ask more detailed questions about liposuction. She will assess your medical history, evaluate your abdominal tissues, and discuss possible treatment options. She will go over pre-operative information, the nature of the procedure itself, her recommendations for anesthesia, and more. By the end of the meeting, you will have the necessary information to make an informed decision that impacts your health and cosmetic appearance.

Procedure Steps
First, Dr. Tobbia will administer local anesthesia and sedation, or her anesthesiologist will administer general anesthesia. The form of anesthesia largely depends on the extent of the procedure and what your preferences are. Next, she will topically disinfect your abdomen and make one or two tiny incisions just above the pubic area. The standard incision length for liposuction is only 1 to 1.5 cm, so these small cuts will heal well and only result in extremely minimal scarring. (3) Next, she will inject an appropriate amount of tumescent fluid into the subcutaneous fat region. If you choose ultrasound-assisted liposuction, she will utilize the ultrasound probe and administer the energy under the skin of your treatment area, breaking up the fat to facilitate easier extraction. With standard tumescent liposuction, she will skip over this step and use a cannula to extract the target fat deposits. After completing the sculpting process, she will close the incisions with surgical tape and gauze and monitor you until your anesthesia wears off.
Recovery and Results
Over the next few days, your abdomen will feel sore, and you may have bruising and swelling in and around the area. As you heal, you should monitor these side effects and report to Dr. Tobbia if they happen to worsen in any way. She will provide you with prescriptions for optimal comfort during these first days. She will also prescribe a compression garment for you to wear to mitigate the swelling and give your skin the support it needs to retract to your newly shaped contours. After about 3 to 4 days, you will be able to return to work, but with some limitations. Until at least a month into your recovery, try to limit physical activity and overexerting yourself. You should schedule a follow-up appointment with Dr. Tobbia to gain clearance to go back to the gym. She will instruct you on how to massage your treatment area to improve lymphatic functioning.

FAQ
Is abdominal liposuction permanent?
For the most part, abdominal liposuction results can be permanent if patients work to maintain their weight. After many years, some sagging skin may develop due to the natural aging process.
Is abdominal liposuction minimally invasive?
Liposuction is minimally invasive because surgeons only need to make incisions of 1 to 1.5 cm.
Can I get abdominal liposuction with just local anesthesia?
It is possible to safely undergo abdominal liposuction with local anesthesia, and your surgeon will provide you with a sedative medication to keep you relaxed during the procedure. Local anesthesia works best with minimal body contouring.
Will ultrasound-assisted abdominal liposuction tighten my skin?
Ultrasound has been shown to have mild skin-tightening effects. If you have moderate to severe lax skin, you may want to consider a tummy tuck or a combination of liposuction and tummy tuck techniques- a lipoabdominoplasty.
