About Facial Fillers

Facial fillers are injectable treatments that either Dr. Tobbia or your injector can administer to restore lost facial volume, elevate your facial features, or address visible signs of aging, such as wrinkles or creases. 

There are several different types of facial fillers available, but at Plastische Chirurgie am Klosterstern, we offer Juvéderm and autologous fat. During your consultation, either Dr. Tobbia or a nurse injector will determine which filler best suits your concerns. 

Juvéderm

Juvéderm is a collection of hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance in the body that provides deep hydration. (1) Juvéderm is available in a range of different formulations, each offering unique concentrations of HA, particle sizes, cross-linking densities, and more. 

Autologous Fat 

Autologous fat fillers take fat from other areas of your body, purify it, and transfer it to the face to restore or augment your appearance. Many medical professionals consider autologous fat to be the ideal filler for rejuvenation, as it is fully biocompatible and produces soft, natural results. Dr. Tobbia uses liposuction techniques to take fat from other areas of the body, with many patients choosing to target their abdomen, thighs, or flanks. (2)

Advice and Treatment

Before scheduling your injections, you will need to attend a personal consultation at our office in Hamburg. During this consultation, either Dr. Tobbia or an expert injector will meet with you individually to discuss your upcoming treatment. They will converse with you about our available fillers, your medical history, your personal concerns, and your desired results. They will also perform a physical examination to assess your facial anatomy and skin quality.

Preparation

Once you have scheduled your appointment, there are certain preparations that you will need to make. Dr. Tobbia or one of our expert injectors will provide detailed instructions to help you. These instructions may vary depending on whether you receive Juvéderm or autologous fat, but generally, you may need to:

  • Avoid Certain Medications: Discontinue medications or supplements that may thin your blood. 
  • Modify Your Skincare: Refrain from using any harsh or irritating skincare products, such as retinols, retinoids, or chemical exfoliants. 
  • Protect Your Skin: Maintain your skin’s health and well-being by wearing plenty of moisturizer and sunscreen.
  • Refrain from Alcohol: Avoid consuming any alcohol in the days before and after your procedure.

Procedure

When you arrive for your appointment, you will have a consultation with our doctor before a member of our team will lead you to a private treatment room. 

If you are receiving Hyaluronic acid/Juvéderm, the correct amount of your filler will be used in harmony to optimize your facial features. The product is then carefully injected into various points of your face to fill in visible signs of aging, restore natural-looking volume, or augment certain features. Once your treatment is completed, the treated areas will be massaged to ensure the filler feels smooth and even. You will then be free to leave. 

Autologous Fat

If you are undergoing autologous fat injections, Dr. Tobbia will perform your injections. 

Dr. Tobbia will first use liposuction techniques to harvest excess fat from various regions of the body. She will place a small incision near the donor site before injecting the fat with a tumescent solution containing lidocaine, epinephrine, and saline. This solution will further numb the treatment area, constrict your blood vessels, and firm your fat cells for easier removal. (3) Dr. Tobbia will then insert a cannula through the incisions and move it back and forth to break down and remove the fat. 

Once Dr. Tobbia harvests the necessary fat, she will process and purify it to ensure only the most viable cells remain. She will then take this fat and inject it into the targeted regions of your face.

Recovery

After your appointment, you may experience some swelling, bruising, or tenderness around the injection sites. These effects are temporary and will subside on their own with time. 

You may return to most of your daily activities shortly after your procedure, although you will need to avoid any physically demanding or strenuous activities until your injector clears you to return. 

If you receive autologous fat, your recovery time may be longer. This is because several areas of your body will be healing, and the transferred fat will also need to re-establish its blood supply. 

Dr. Tobbia will provide you with a set of detailed recovery instructions after your treatment. By following each one, you can both return to your routine more quickly and ensure the best possible results. 

Results

You will be able to see the initial results of your facial fillers immediately after your appointment. While your results may vary depending on your concerns, you can expect to experience restored volume, improved facial symmetry, smoother skin, enhanced proportionality, and a more youthful-looking appearance overall. 

The results of your facial fillers can vary depending on the filler you receive and the area you target. Juvéderm can last between 8 and 24 months, while autologous fat injections yield more permanent results.

Is there a difference between Juvéderm and autologous fat?

Juvéderm is a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler that attracts and maintains moisture in the skin. Autologous fat is purified fat from other areas of your body, such as the abdomen, thighs, or arms. 

Can facial fillers be reversed?

Only hyaluronic acid-based fillers, such as Juvéderm, are reversible with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. Other types of fillers cannot be dissolved.
