About Breast Augmentations with Breast Implants

Implants are used to enhance the shape and projection of the breasts.

A breast augmentation with implants is an enhancement surgery that will improve the shape and volume of your chest. This procedure is very popular among older women and women who have had children. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can leave your breasts sagging and appearing deflated. Your areolas may also become stretched and leave your nipples pointing downward. A breast augmentation surgery will revitalize your chest and leave you with a perkier appearance!

Benefits

An augmentation and breast implant surgery has many advantages, the procedure is long-lasting and improves the profile and appearance of your chest. The treatment will leave your skin smooth and will improve breast volume.

Am I a Candidate for Breast Augmentation with Implants?

Breast surgery of any kind is a deeply personal decision between you and your doctor. You may be a good candidate for enhancement if you meet the following criteria:

  • You have realistic expectations
  • You are healthy, and aren’t pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You feel that your breasts are too small
  • You have asymmetrical breasts or a deformity that makes you self-conscious
  • You have lost volume in your breasts after weight loss or pregnancy, making them look deflated

Before you consider undergoing any surgical procedure, a physical examination and consultation will take place with our surgical expert.

Breast Enlargement Details

Once you’ve decided that breast augmentation with implants is right for you, there are several other decisions to be made, including size, shape, and placement of the implant. Dr. Dalia Tobbia will guide you through those decisions so that you are aware of what implants are available, and what will work best for your body and your desired results.

Breast Implant Types

By choosing to exclusively use Mentor® breast implants, we ensure that only the best quality implants are used in all of our procedures. Mentor® implants are backed by the MentorPromise™ Protection Plan, guaranteeing free lifetime replacements for up to two implants in the unlikelihood of a rupture. For the best breast implants, you can trust Mentor® to provide amazing results!

Mentor® breast offers many types of implants that include many breast enhancing products. The most common implants we use are silicone and saline implants.

SILICONE BREAST IMPLANTS
These implants consist of a silicone pocket filled with a silicone-based gel. There are two implant shapes to choose from: round or anatomic (teardrop shape) implants. These implants will vary in projection to provide small or large breast enhancement.

SALINE BREAST IMPLANTS
These implants are a silicone pocket filled with a saline solution. They are natural feeling and provide a safety measure; in the event of a rupture, the saline will be naturally absorbed by your body.

ROUND IMPLANTS
These tend to give more fullness in the upper pole of the breasts with more pronounced cleavage.

TEARDROP IMPLANTS
The anatomic implants can give a more natural look, especially in patients with small breasts and a lean upper body.

Implant Placement

Implants are placed either above or below the pectoral muscle.

Determining the placement of the implant often is between two options: above or below (“dual plane”) the muscle. Implant placement will also play an important role in the final outcome. Placing the implants over the muscle may be easier and quicker, but inserting the implants under the muscle typically offers a more natural appearance and provide more of one’s own tissue cover over the implant. The two placements methods are referred to as sub-muscular and sub-glandular.

Sub-muscular refers to the implant being placed beneath the muscle. This is often performed on patients with little supportive breast tissue. The implant will create a natural breast mound for your breast tissue to rest upon.

Sub-glandular refers to an implant being placed above the muscle and is only performed on patients with enough extra breast tissue to cover the implant for a natural result. Placing the implant above the breast muscle will help to boost remaining tissue and improve breast projection.

Incision Type

Placement of the incisions is also a factor, and there are three to choose from: inframammary (under the breast fold), periareolar (around the nipple), or axillary (in the armpit).

INFRAMAMMARY INCISION
This incision is made under the breast in the natural crease that forms at its base. This incision is often used alongside larger implants.

PERIAREOLAR INCISION
A thin incision will be made along the natural border of the areola. This incision is often used to help sculpt breast tissue and adjust the placement of the areolas.

TRANS-AXILLARY INCISION
A small incision will be made in the armpit. Dr. Dalia Tobbia will use a thin camera and tools to guide the implant to the chest wall. This incision will achieve breast augmentation without any scars to the breasts.

While there are many issues to discuss prior to your surgery, we endeavor to give you a relaxed experience, provide you with ample time to ask questions and guide you through the decision process to find the surgical option that is the most suitable for you.

Preparation for Surgery

For a healthy, positive procedure and recovery, you will want to follow Dr. Dalia Tobbia’s instructions. There are a few other ways for you to prepare for your surgical procedure as well, such as:

PICK-UP NECESSITIES
Be sure to get all the necessities you will need for your recovery, such as medications and ointments.

PREPARE A RECOVERY AREA
It will help to have an area at home where you can rest and sleep without being bothered. Have your necessities within arms reach to help improve the comfort of your healing process.

RECRUIT HELP
You will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment. It will help to have someone stay with you for the first few days of your recovery to ensure you receive assistance.

12 hours before your procedure you will have to stop eating. It is okay to drink water, but other liquids or foods should not be consumed. Before your appointment, we recommend you take a shower and dress in comfortable clothes that can be removed easily without applying pressure to your chest. Button-up clothes are a good idea in these instances. Arrive a few minutes early so you can have a restful morning and not feel rushed.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure

At Klosterstern Plastic Surgery, we employ the most up to date concepts in our surgical techniques. The operation for breast enlargement is usually performed using general anesthesia, and depending on the patient, it may be an outpatient procedure or one where the patient stays overnight.

Once you are prepped and ready for surgery, you will be put under anesthesia and the procedure will begin. Dr. Dalia Tobbia will make an incision in the area that you chose, which will depend on the size of the implant, the placement of the implant, and the preference of both you and your surgeon. The implant will then be placed in a pocket created under the skin (subglandular) or under the pectoral muscle (submuscular) and correctly positioned. Dr. Dalia Tobbia will close the incisions and you will be moved to recovery.

Post-Operative Care

After your surgery, a special support bra must be worn at all times for a total of six weeks.

Usually, one drain is placed in each breast, and most often those are removed one to two days post procedure. Mobilization after the surgery is possible, but you should avoid strenuous physical activities and heavy lifting for at least four to six weeks.

The breasts will be swollen immediately after the surgery, however, the swelling will subside gradually, and you will be able to see your final results within a few weeks. Results of breast augmentation are considered permanent and will last for many years. They may change a bit with time, but this is a natural part of the aging process. Breast-feeding can proceed normally following augmentation with breast implants, and routine cancer screening is also possible after implant placement.

Side Effects and Risks

As with any surgical procedure, there are some risks. You may have an increase or decrease in nipple sensation, but this is usually temporary and will resolve itself. There is also an extremely small chance that your implant will leak or rupture, and while this is inconvenient and will require revision surgery, it is not dangerous to your health. The side effect that causes the biggest problem (although it only occurs in about five percent of women with implants) is known as capsular contracture. This complication occurs when the scar tissue creates a capsule around the implant, squeezing it and causing it to feel hard and painful. This also requires revision surgery, but again, is not a common problem.

With the highest quality products on the market, Mentor® implants reduce the risks associated with breast augmentation. Additionally, Mentor® implants are specifically textured on their outer surface to further reduce the occurrence of capsular contracture. Mentor® believes in the quality of their products and stands behind them with a lifetime guarantee.

Results of Breast Augmentation with Implants

You will immediately notice an improvement in the size, projection, and appearance of your chest following the surgery. These results will only continue to improve as swelling subsides. You should see improvements after a few weeks and your final results after a couple of months. These results will be long-lasting and, with a healthy diet and exercise, should last for years!

Complementary or Alternative Procedures

Dr. Dalia Tobbia is well-experienced and highly qualified to perform other procedures related to the appearance of the chest, these include:

Breast Augmentation with Fat Transfer

A fat transfer breast augmentation is another breast augmentation technique. This is when fat is removed from a donor area of your body, purified and injected into the chest to enhance its size. This procedure uses liposuction techniques to gather fat. Breast augmentation with fat transfer is a more subtle enhancement of the chest and slims down another area of the body, providing a comprehensive transformation!

Sometimes additional fat transfer to the breasts can be performed in addition to augmentation with implants to further improve the breast shape in some select cases.

Breast Reduction

This procedure is excellent for women whose breasts have become excessively large and heavy. A breast reduction may be combined with liposuction techniques to help reduce excess fat and tissue. The result will be smaller, more proportionate, more comfortable breasts.

Breast Lift

This is another great treatment for women who have lost a lot of weight or whose breasts have become flat-looking with age. A breast lift is a surgical procedure that is commonly combined with an augmentation. The lift will reposition the chest in a higher, younger position.

These treatments are performed with care and attention to detail to yield your best results!

Cost of Breast Augmentation with Implants

A breast augmentation with implants is a very personalized procedure. This treatment will vary in cost between patients based on their specific anatomy and desired aesthetic.
